Situated less than 300 kilometres from Brisbane, this small, but thriving community has progressed from a rural based economy reliant mainly on grain crops to the progressive, dynamic region where coal and gas exploration and power station development projects go hand-in-hand with extensive feedlots, cotton and broad-acre farming. The town of Chinchilla itself boasts many services and amenities, while retaining its rustic charm and character. As coal and gas interests continue to develop within the region, significant benefits will flow on to other sectors, particularly education, construction, infrastructure, transport and logistics.

The Western Downs is located in the heart of the Surat Basin, an area significant for its abundant natural resources. Many of the resources – including gas, coal and water – have strong regional and national importance. Around 25 percent of Australia's melons are grown in this area.

By 2011, the Surat Basin will be Australia's largest energy province. Chinchilla is located in the heart of the Surat Basin and over the next three to five years the township will become the base for several major energy and resource companies with operations in the area.
