The Industry
The Western Downs is in the heart of the Surat Basin, an area significant for its abundant natural resources. Many of the resources - including gas, coal and water - have strong regional and national importance. The state government strongly supports strategic investment in the mining, processing and refining of minerals, industries for which Chinchilla's infrastructure provides a cost-competitive advantage. Around 25 per cent of Australia's melons (rockmelons, watermelons and honeydew) are grown in this area.

The Town
The Chinchilla region offers rich diversity, extensive infrastructure, warm community spirit and exceptional investor potential. Just 300km west of Brisbane, Chinchilla Shire lies in the heart of the Western Downs. Home to more than 6200 people - with about 4000 in the town of Chinchilla - the Shire offers the right mix to people seeking a 'tree change' to a more relaxed, rural environment, including new and traditional housing, abundant jobs, low crime, terrific community facilities and very low unemployment.

For Investors
Chinchilla offers a pristine escape from the pressures of urban living, with fresh air and an authentic country experience. The cultural richness of the region is celebrated through a variety of significant festivals and events each year. A family-friendly region, the largest age group in Chinchilla is 0-9 years, with more than half of the households being couples with children who are likely to be paying $400-600 per month on mortgage repayments. Around 70 per cent of homes in Chinchilla are owner-occupied (up 10 per cent on 1996).

The Lifestyle
As coal and gas interests continue to develop within the region, significant benefits will flow on to other sectors, particularly education, construction, infrastructure, transport and logistics. Already, Chinchilla is growing rapidly to accommodate increased investment and demand exists for many associated and downstream industries.
